Esther Stocker ( 1974, Silandro, Italy) lives and works in Vienna.

Esther Stocker made her debut at the end of the Nineties with abstract paintings in which geometric signs and orthogonal grids overlap themselves using just few colours like white, grey and black. In those paintings the irregular grids bring to mind the concept of “mimesis” but not in a platonic sense of imitation of nature rather in a sense of camouflage. Those grids aim to investigate the perceptual faculties of the visitors.

From some points of view this could recall the artistic experiences related to the Op Art but Stocker’s approaches are different because the camouflage is not hidden but revealed by the countless irregularity of the grids.

Those grids expand from the canvas to the space invading floor, ceiling, walls of galleries and museums. In this way they become sensory installations with which visitors interact. The artist is interested in the environment fragmentation, the spatial ambiguity and perceptual uncertainty that generate loneliness, despair and excitement.
